Unplug to De-stress: Turn Off Your Gadgets, Decompress and Feel Better

Get off the grid for an hour to de-stress and finish the day relaxed.

While we admit technology is more than amazing, we also have come to realize that even more amazing is the life we may be forgetting to live.

We may tend to see our computer screen more than we see the faces of those we love. We text, we email, we update statuses and browse the web, but we forget to schedule time to turn it all off and just connect and decompress and end our days with our families.

Here, then, is a challenge for all of us: Take at least one hour a day to turn off technology and simply enjoy the moment. We’ve even taken it one step further to come up with some ideas to help you begin (or remember) what it’s like to just turn it all off and breathe.

Take a Walk
Be sure to leave your phone at home. Take 30 minutes to simply get outside and notice the world around you. Walk slowly, without a purpose. Be mindful of your thoughts and take notice of your breath. Don’t get caught up in a destination or feeling as though you need to go a certain distance. Just walk and breathe — and enjoy the freedom of being able to do so.

Do Something You’ve Been Meaning to Do
Maybe it’s time to get that manicure or pedicure you’ve been putting off. Or maybe you need to make a coffee date with a friend you haven’t seen in person in a while. Or maybe it’s time to finally ignore the check engine light in your car. Whatever the task is, do it without the distraction of technology. Grab a magazine, a book or even a friend and make the most of getting things done.

Begin a Hobby
Shake off the dust from that tennis racket and head out to the courts for a little game with your spouse. Maybe try hitting the gym an hour every day and start doing yoga. Get a group of friends together and meet a few times a week to go hiking. If writing is your thing, grab a fountain pen and paper and head to a park where you can write free from technology and online influences. Like photography? Sign up for a class or simply take your camera out for an hour a day to work on your skills. Whatever that “thing” is, do it. There are so many options to fill that hour that you won’t even notice you haven’t been plugged in.

Take a Nap
It may seem silly, but, sometimes, we just need to rest our eyes, mind and body for a quick minute. Shut it all off, get cosy on the couch and let your mind unwind for a bit. Even if you can’t sleep, the rest you get from simply relaxing will help you finish the day with a better, stronger, happier you.

Better Yet, Take a Bath
There is something so relaxing and therapeutic about taking a bath. As adults, we sometimes forget we can take them too. Add in some essential oils (lavender is renowned for its soothing aroma) or bubbles, and enjoy!

Get Your Rest
As you wind down to finish the day, keep your phones, tablets, laptops and anything else distracting — and potentially stressful — away from the bedroom. You wouldn’t expect someone to answer your email at 10 p.m. regarding a work-related question, right? So hold yourself to that and get your rest!
