If you’re struggling to get veggies in your kids’ diets, try some of these ideas.
1. Don’t Make Veggies a Big Deal
A big mistake parents often make when trying to feed their children vegetables is letting the situation escalate to a dramatic stand off. Telling your child they can’t leave the dinner table until the broccoli is gone can actually make your child avoid the veggie even more. Encouraging them to try foods in positive ways will be your key to success.
2. Introduce Veggies Early On
As soon as your baby can handle non-pureed veggies, put some on her plate. The sooner children get familiar with vegetables and their natural flavour, the more accepted veggies will be overall.
3. It’s Okay to Sneak
If your kids love banana smoothies, throw in some kale. Spinach is another veggie that’s super easy to blend. Does your family juice? Try some carrots in the juicer with apples.

4. Plan Different Kinds of Dinners
Go for variety. Try not to go the easy route (although so tempting!) by serving the same couple of kid-approved dinners over and over. Trying new foods outside of the vegetable realm (like a whole spectrum of rice, fruit and spice flavours) will make your kids more likely to embrace veggies, too.
5. Dip it
Many kids claim to hate carrots – until they’re dipped in something delicious. Try dips that taste great and have great nutritional value, like hummus or even peanut butter. Kids won’t be so quick to refuse carrots when they’re served up as a snack.
6. Get Your Kids in the Kitchen
Kids like to be involved with food prep. If they are a part of the meal from start to finish, they are more likely to want to eat it. Just by knowing that they put the veggies on the plate makes them more inclined to take a taste.
7. Add Veggies to Favourite Foods
If your kids love pizza, encourage them to experiment with toppings! Showing how much you love mushrooms on your pizza may make them spring for green peppers, at least for a slice or two.
If you’re making your pizza at home, you can try a different veggie on every slice. Set out bowls of peppers, mushrooms, onions and even broccoli and cauliflower. Then make a totally delicious (and nutritious) pizza together.
