Energy Boosters: 7 Healthy Snacks to Keep You Moving

In need of a midday pick-me-up? Check out our list of 7 healthy, energizing snacks.

Contrary to popular belief, kids aren’t the only ones who need an afternoon pick-me-up! If you have a busy day ahead, you’ll need some extra fuel too. While you could propel yourself with multiple cups of coffee throughout the day, there are plenty of snacks get you through the day. Here’s a list of some of our favourites:

1. Nuts
Many people avoid nuts due to the fat, but there are good and bad fats – walnuts, for example, contain large amounts of the polyunsaturated fatty acid omega-3, and almonds contain healthy monounsaturated fat. Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium, and almonds, cashews, pistachios and hazelnuts are rich in iron.

2. Dried Fruit and Seeds
Take a look at the nutritional facts of your favourite granola bar. Many of them contain lots of added sugar! Instead, grab sunflower seeds (which are rich in omega-6), dried apricots (without sulphite), raisins or various nut and berry mixes (natural trail mix), which contain iron and calcium for slow-release energy.

3. Dark Chocolate or Liquorice
A few squares of dark chocolate (the higher the cocoa content, the better) and liquorice are good if you need to get extra iron. Dark chocolate also contains antioxidants.

4. Bananas
In ripe bananas, a large proportion of the starch has been converted to sugar, which makes them easier to digest. Eat a banana together with a handful of nuts for long-lasting energy.

5. Oats
Of all the snacks that give you energy, oats have a cholesterol-lowering effect and are high in fibre, Vitamins B and E, iron and zinc. Dry biscuits and hardtack (a simple cracker or biscuit) can give you all-day energy.

6. Cucumbers, Carrots and Celery
Cucumber gives moisture and is good for muscles, bones and other body tissues. And if you’re not a fan of cucumber, carrots and celery make great options as well.

Tip: Pack veggies in a Mason jar so they’re ready to grab on the go, whenever you need them! You can coat the bottom of the jar with your favourite dipping accompaniment too, like peanut butter or hummus.

7. Apples
Apples are a good source of energy and aid in digestion. They also say eating a crisp apple helps you wake up in the mornings better than coffee can.
