Bike Riding: How to Stay Active and Have Fun

Bike riding is a form of recreation, but it’s also a great way to get exercise, too.

I grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida, where bike riding was a weekly, if not a daily activity. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love riding a bike in Florida? The land is flat, the paths are smooth, and it’s almost effortless to glide along and enjoy the breeze on a nice day. We loved riding bikes in the heat because the wind would be just enough to cool our skin in the sun.

Of course, we can’t all be so lucky, and we may need a few more incentives to get rolling. Biking is exercise after all, and sometimes we just don’t feel like it. But there is something about cruising down the road on a bicycle that can take you straight back to your childhood — and it’s really a lovely feeling.

Enjoy the Exercise
Staying active is only one of the many benefits of riding a bike. Yes, biking is a great way to exercise, but getting your heart rate up seems secondary to enjoying the ride. There is often nothing better than riding to a nearby park to relax on a Saturday. Of course, before you begin biking, it’s a good idea to consult with your physician to ensure you are healthy enough to begin this form of exercise.

You can bike alone, yes, but you can also join a cycling club to ride with friends, enabling you to get social and in shape at the same time. Try using a day to learn about your city by cycling through town, stopping at little shops and cafes along the way. If you have a vehicle large enough to accommodate bikes, check out new trails and parks farther from home. State parks often have biking trails that offer new adventures, sometimes with beautiful views.

Make it Part of Your Regular Routine
The key to truly enjoying your biking experience is to make it a part of your life, just as you would a car or public transportation. Even if you are just going to a park, when you use your bike to get from point A to point B with a real destination in mind, you can relax and enjoy the ride. After all, bikes were created first as transportation, and then became a form of recreation. And it’s perfectly acceptable to enjoy both!

Bike riding is something that kids of all ages can enjoy. Many childhood memories are made by riding bikes through neighbourhoods or in the driveways in front of homes. Instil a love of bike riding in your kids by taking them on rides with you. And when those training wheels come off, don’t forget to celebrate! This is a skill that will be with them forever.

Riding a bike is not only a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get active, but it also creates memories, invokes feelings of nostalgia and allows us to let go of our daily stress for at least a few minutes at a time. Families looking for a fun way to get active together can get creative and have a great time on weekly rides. The best part is, you will see something new each and every time your tires hit the road.

Cycling is my favourite exercise of all. I live in a beautiful part of the world - southwestern BC - and, despite what most of this region is like, I live in a flat area that's great for bike riding. I've not ridden a bike for quite a while for various reasons, but on the next nice day that's not windy, I'm going out on my bike. I do live in a windy area that's prohibitive to cycling sometimes, but I can bike most of the year, and that's fantastic. :D
