6 Small Steps toward a Healthy Lifestyle

6 Small Steps toward a Healthy Lifestyle

With these 6 easy tips, you’ll be on your way to your best self in the New Year.

Grandiose promises and resolutions are requisite parts of the New Year, but we often come up short in seeing them through. Rather than make a long list of big life changes, why not start with the basics? Keeping things simple allows you to focus better, increasing your chances of successfully following through.

Here are five simple things you can do to help make this new year the best one yet. As always, be sure to consult your doctor before making changes to your daily routine.

1. Move a Little More
Starting an exercise routine usually tops the resolutions list for many people; however, actually doing it can be daunting. Start off by making a goal to move a little bit more every day.

At work, you can take the stairs instead of the elevator – especially if it’s only a flight or two. When you’re going to the store, park in a spot that’s a little farther away from the entrance so you walk that much more. At home, you can sneak in a plank while watching TV or play outside with your kids or grandkids. Yes, they may seem like little things, but all of these slight changes add up to help you live a better life.

Tip: Add Downy Fresh Protect to the wash cycle of your laundry routine. It has motion-activated fresheners that neutralize bad odours so you’ll smell fresh as you move through your day.

2. Hydrate Right
Drinking enough water is an important aspect of overall health, yet many people struggle with staying properly hydrated. (Of course, talk your doctor before making any significant changes to your water intake.)

Set a reminder alarm on your cell phone or pre-fill water bottles for your target intake amount each day. If you get bored with plain water, add some fruit to give it a little bit of flavour!

3. Properly Fuel Your Body
Being overly restrictive in your eating habits is one of the quickest ways to fail. Instead, make small changes to your current diet to see long-term success. Find yourself frequently eating out for lunch? Plan to pack your lunch most days of the week, leaving yourself one available day to eat out. Not only will you save money, but you can also make sure you’re making a nutritious lunch choice.

Try to stay away from processed foods and instead load up on fruits and veggies while also understanding that healthy living comes with a bit of indulgence, too. It’s totally fine to have a cupcake at a birthday celebration from time to time!

4. Make Me-time (Whether You Think You Need it or Not)
Between a busy work schedule and jam-packed family time, it can be hard to find the hours to treat yourself. Make sure to take some time to indulge in something that makes you truly happy. Whatever you enjoy doing, make sure you commit some of your time toward it, even if it’s only 10 minutes a day. Feeling happy is a great indicator of living a healthy lifestyle.

5. Stay up to Date on Doctor Appointments
Many people forget that having an annual checkup is an important part of living a healthy life. Schedule your annual appointments at the beginning of the year when it’s fresh in your mind and you’re sure to get it done. This is also a good time to make sure you’ve made dentist appointments for cleanings as well.

These small changes will become habits soon enough, bringing the results you want to see. Feel free to build on them if you’re not feeling challenged, and remember to take great care of yourself this year!

6. Get More Fibre
It may not be the most exciting part of your daily diet, but getting more fibre is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Thankfully, there’s an easy solution – Metamucil. You can try Metamucil powders or capsules to maintain regularity. And if you’re running out the door, grab a Meta Health Bar to go!
