4 Summer Celebration Safety Tips

Check out these 4 tips to get the most out of your summer festivities.

The summer is full of fun times with your family — grilling, playing, slipping and sliding. While a few bumps and bruises along the way are to be expected, here are a few quick tips to make sure this summer is a safe one.

1. Protect Your Skin
Summer should be the season of big hats, big umbrellas and big globs of sunscreen. A few minutes in the sun is no big deal, but prolonged exposure can be an issue. The kids may not like it, but be sure to slather them up every few hours. And while you may feel the urge to get that nice golden tan, wearing long sleeves and long pants — made of light cotton or linen, of course — is going to help prevent long-term damage and minimize the number of wrinkles you have 30 years from now.

2. Hydrate
Sodas and other beverages are tempting in the summer, but they can actually lead to dehydration. Alternate drinks with a bottle of water to reduce the risk of dehydration. And set a timer on your phone — maybe every hour or so — to remind everyone, especially the kids, to take a quick break and drink a full cup of water.

3. Keep Bugs Away
Warm weather means a resurgence of bugs that are attracted to exposed skin. Perform regular tick checks on family members, and use preventive tick medicine on the family dog. Since mosquitos can breed in the smallest amounts of standing water, tip over vessels after a summer rainstorm to discourage breeding in your yard, and apply insect repellent to avoid bug bites.

4. Watch the Grill
Before your summer bash, move your barbecue to a location that’s at least 10 feet from your house, and clean it to reduce the grease and fat buildup that could provide fuel for a fire. Once it’s lit, never leave it unattended, and be sure children know it’s too hot to touch and they should just avoid going close to it.
