How to Take Charge of Your Own Health

These five easy tips will make you healthier and improve your overall wellbeing this fall.

Fall has arrived — along with pumpkins, changing leaves and cooler temperatures — and now that the year is well past the halfway mark, the resolution of getting fit back in January may be long gone.

But just because it’s fall doesn’t mean it’s too late to take charge of your health and start on the path to be your best self. Here are five simple things that you can do to feel better and start getting fit right now.

1. Schedule Your Annual Check-up
If you haven’t already seen your healthcare provider this year, schedule your annual exam now. Seeing a medical professional on a regular basis is imperative for overall health and wellness. While you’re there, make sure you’re cleared for doing physical exercise, too. Two birds with one stone! Also, if you haven’t had your teeth cleaned, schedule a visit to the dentist. A healthy mouth is just as important as a healthy body.

2. Create a Meal Plan
Life gets busy, and we often find ourselves scratching our heads at the end of the day wondering what to eat for dinner. Making time on the weekends to plan your meals for the week ahead and going to the grocery store to stock up on healthy options, however, will alleviate this issue.

Creating healthy meals at home not only keeps you healthy, it improves the health of those who live with you! Having a plan makes eating healthy much easier.

3. Find Time for Fitness
If working out isn’t already a part of your everyday routine, find a way to fit it in! Whether that means going for a 30-minute walk each day or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, every little bit counts. Joining a gym is a great option, or try a workout channel on TV or a DVD to help jumpstart your progress.

4. Create a Fall (Fun) To-do List
Finding time for fun is a great way to empower yourself and find joy in the season. Planning a trip to the pumpkin patch, sipping hot cider or even jumping into a pile of leaves can make for fun, feel-good fall moments. If you have a significant other, make the list together!

Be sure to let the kids in on the fun, too. Include something they want to do (like visiting that pumpkin patch) — it’s a great way to come together as a family and have a great time.

5. Feed Your Soul
After spending so much time thinking about your physical wellbeing, it’s important to spend some time thinking about your mental health. Starting a journal to channel your thoughts or setting aside 10 minutes a day to meditate can do wonders to rejuvenate the soul. Scheduling a weekly yoga class is another great way to bring some Zen into your life.

Fall is just one season, but by taking simple steps to take charge of your health and empower those around you, you can make it the best season of the year.
