Natural Energy: How to Stay Energized Without the Caffeine

Don’t reach for another cup of coffee or can of diet soda when you're feeling low on energy. Create a healthy lifestyle by tapping into your natural energy sources and use the following steps to kick that caffeine addiction for good.

Deepen Your Sleep
That double latte you drank after lunch may boost your spirits during the afternoon, but it most likely will disrupt your sleep at night. Caffeine intake and stress can interrupt your shut-eye, specifically the restorative rapid eye movement (REM) stage of the sleep cycle. REM sleep, or dream sleep, relieves stress, processes emotions and retains memories. A lack of it due to sleep deprivation can decrease your motivation, as well as give you memory and concentration loss. Cutting out caffeine and devoting at least eight hours to sleep per night will keep your sleep cycle healthy, complete and enhance your brainpower during the day.

Check Your Diet
Did you know that what you eat and drink — and what you don't — could be draining your energy? If you choose heavy foods and caffeinated beverages during the day, know this: Large daytime meals drain energy from your brain and muscles. Combat these stats by eating five to six small meals a day. Make sure your meals are low in carbohydrates and high in protein. For a healthy diet, have lots of fresh veggies and fruits, which contain a high water content, to help you get hydrated. Continue your hydration by substituting your coffee or cola for water (add a lemon slice for zest), with a goal of drinking about 1.42 litres glasses a day.

Sweat it Out
Exercising may sound like the last activity you want to do when you're tired and have low energy, but it might be the best cure for your fatigue. Regular exercise releases high levels of mood-enhancing, naturally produced chemicals, such as dopamine and serotonin that spark your energy and keep you upbeat and focused. Unlike providing the short rush of caffeine, exercise gives you a steady stream of energy, making you feel more awake and alert throughout your day. If your busy schedule makes it difficult to fit in a full workout, take small breaks throughout the day to get your heart rate up. Climb the stairs for five minutes in your office building or take a quick stroll around the block to energize your body and brain. And, as always, be sure to consult a physician before participating in any strenuous activity.
