How to Get Your Best Night’s Sleep

Try these tips to get your best night’s sleep and prepare for the busy day ahead.

We’ve all been there before: you’re lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but your mind refuses to shut down. Instead, you’re thinking about to-do lists, your kids’ schedules and what’s for dinner tomorrow. You’re also still trying to relax from the chaos of the day – the three dinners you had to make your kids since they wouldn’t eat the first two, helping with the homework you couldn’t quite figure out, the blocks you still haven’t cleaned up after building a castle with the little ones.

But a good night’s sleep is essential for both you and your family. With these four tips, you’ll be on your way to a well-deserved, restful night’s sleep every day of the week.

1. Aroma Therapy
There are a lot of great ways to use your sense of smell to relax each night. Some herbal tea (nothing with caffeine, remember) or some incense can help you enjoy a few minutes to yourself.

Finish by slathering on some lavender lotion right before bed to clear your mind and relax your senses.

2. Get Comfortable
Even something as small as an earring or bracelet can cause enough discomfort to wake you up in the middle of the night. If there are any steps you can take to avoid being woken up, take them! Nothing is worse than waking up (and not being able to get back to sleep) due to something you could have avoided.

And be sure to start with a clean, freshly made bed and wash your sheets with Ultra Downy Infusions (the lavender scent would be a great choice).

3. Don’t be Afraid of the Bedtime Snack
If your stomach is grumbling before bed, treat yourself to a snack! We’ve been warned against snacks to stay fit and healthy, even being told we shouldn’t eat after dinner. But contrary to that belief, a little treat before bed can actually help ensure a full night of rest.

For a sound snooze without the hunger, try one of these bedtime snacks:

  • Half a banana and a few raw almonds
  • Peanut butter with apple slices
  • Cheddar cheese on a whole-wheat cracker
  • Low-fat yogurt with fresh berries
  • Chamomile tea

4. Save Thoughts for Tomorrow
Important thoughts always seem to come at the worst time – like in the shower or in bed. Keep a pen and pad of paper on your nightstand to jot down thoughts or ideas and get them out of your brain.

Then, take a few minutes to clear your mind and focus on sleep. Stretch, take a few deep breaths and relax your muscles so you can enjoy your rest.
