Summer brings its own set of germs and pitfalls, but with some simple precautions, they don’t have to slow down the fun. Learn proper pool safety and warm-weather tips.

Summer Allergies

Pool Safety
Take care of your skin and avoid contact with damp surfaces to prevent fungal infections.

  • Don’t stay in wet bathing suits or clothing longer than necessary.

  • Always wear footwear in public restrooms and locker rooms.
  • Avoid sitting on benches in public locker rooms, or put a towel down first.

Food Safety
Summer is the time for outdoor dining, but with the hot temperatures, food safety is crucial.

  • Always wash hands before handling food.
  • Keep cold food below 4 C (40 F) and hot foods above 60 C (140 F).
  • Keep coolers out of the sun and avoid opening the lid frequently. Pack beverages in one cooler and perishables in another to avoid this pitfall.
  • Avoid mayonnaise-based salads by using recipes that use vinegar and oil dressings.

Prevent Bug Bites

  • Contact your doctor to discuss the best insect repellents for your family.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants if possible when playing or hiking through the woods or tall grasses.
  • Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, pool covers, pet water dishes and birdbaths on a regular basis.

Cuts and Scrapes
