5 Ways to Shake Up Your Life

5 Ways to Shake Up Your Life

Feeling like you’re stuck in a rut? Use these tips to get the most out of every day!

Whether you know exactly what you want and how to get it or are just looking for some motivation to get a new outlook on life, here are a few tips to get you out of any rut and start looking forward to all the possibilities in your future.

1. Get Comfy with Change
You can train yourself to adjust your outlook just like you can train for any physical activity. Taking measured risks or doing new things that make you a little anxious can give you the courage to get out of your comfort zone more often, so try to do one new thing a week.

Whether it’s ascending the local climbing wall or taking an Italian class, you’ll find that once you get the ball rolling on small life changes, a bigger one is less intimidating.

2. Test Drive a New Career
Think about the things you like to do. Are you the best cook in the neighbourhood? The most ambitious gardener? You may be able to turn a hobby into a business!

You can get a first-hand impression of the job by shadowing a professional in any given field for a few days. Observe a day in the life of a dream job to see if it’s actually what you made it out to be in your head. If it is, see if you can get on a job part time or even try doing your chosen job around the neighbourhood to start out.

3. Book a “Reinvention” Weekend
Spend the weekend at your house (alone if you can) and truly look at what it is about your life that you’d like to work on. Is it your personal relationships? The time you devote to hobbies? Your stress levels?

No matter what it is, spend a good amount of time thinking about some of the strengths and weaknesses you see in your everyday and try to match aspects of your strengths (scheduling, focus, etc.) to some of your weaknesses so you can address them in the most positive, effective way possible.

If one of your strengths is never being late to anything, for instance, and one of the things you’d like to work on is spending more time with friends, use your scheduling and punctuality skills to create an obligatory get-together.

4. Don't Set Yourself Up for Failure
The first thing everybody tells you when you’re contemplating a big change is you’ve got to believe in yourself. This is essential! Whether you’re starting a small business, beginning a new project or planning a new adventure, you need to be positive and confident. Your attitude is as important as your knowledge and skills.

5. Don't Listen to Naysayers
It’s almost inevitable that some people — maybe even family and friends — will not be comfortable with changing up your routine. Change is hard!

If you’ve done your due diligence by thoroughly vetting any new adventure, you can feel confident sticking to your guns. Also, consider where these doubters may be coming from: Are they threatened by your life change? Are they feeling left behind as you move forward? If that’s the case, be empathetic and understand their feelings are coming from caring about you — but don’t allow them to cloud your thinking. (If they bring up legitimate logistical or other types of concerns, however, be sure to read into it!)

Only by balancing your own emotions — especially your boundless confidence and valuable self-awareness — will you succeed. But when you do succeed, you’ll be living the life you’ve been dreaming about for years.
