How to Give Your Home a Splash of Summer

Invigorate your interior rooms with sunny décor, fresh scents and nature-inspired colors and accessories.

As temperatures climb and summer comes knocking on our doors, we begin to crave a change of scenery. Maybe it’s the desire to head out on vacation or just the need to lighten up that has us in the mood for an outdoor-inspired home makeover.

These five fresh design ideas will wake up your home décor with a splash of summer. Read on for our best nature-inspired design ideas.

Take a cue from the sun's golden rays and bring in some gold (or even brass) tones through pillows, trays or other home accents. Mixing metals is perfectly OK, but if you're nervous about making the switch, try introducing a few new accessories to one room at a time.

Tip: Do a light clean as you redecorate for summer. Use the Swiffer Sweep + Vac to clean dust, dirt and hair from the floors – it combines a powerful vacuum with a sweeping cloth that can pick up big and small messes, even in textured grout lines and crevices. Then trap and lock dust on blinds and baseboards with a Swiffer 360 Duster.

Summer is the season for bright, vibrant colors. Bringing in some bold, fresh-from-the-garden hues can instantly transform a guest bedroom or any other room still in hibernation. (Think hot pink, emerald green, orange or even lime.) Do you have white, cream or gray walls? Hunt for cheap (and noncommittal) accessories like lamps, vases or throws in sunset hues like deep orange and magenta – they'll really pop against those neutral wall colors.

Tip: Spray Febreze ONE on sofas, throws and pillows to clean away odours without using aerosols, dyes or heavy perfumes.

Yellow is the go-to happy color of the season and is available on lots of pillows and accessories. Too bold for your living room décor? Why not try introducing a little citrus yellow in the kitchen instead, where the fresh, energizing color looks perfectly at home? ;A bowl full of lemons or pineapples, a cheery yellow table runner or even a bunch of yellow roses are all temporary ways to try a color change.

Tip: Wave goodbye to tough odours with Febreze PLUG. The Heavy Duty Crisp Clean scent blends lemony verbena with cucumber and cool, watery notes, and smells exactly like summer.

Get some design inspiration from the beach! Beach-inspired hues like sea green, mint and pale blue offer a soothing respite to the summer heat. If you're thinking of repainting your walls, be smart and try several swatches first, since pastel blues and greens can be tricky to get "just right." On pillows, artwork and linens, blue hues are more forgiving and can be fun to mix and match.

Pick a few flowers from your backyard (or buy a bouquet at a farmer's market). If you're lucky enough to live near a park or outdoor space, snap a few photos of the natural beauty around you.

Can you sneak in a short walk on your lunch break to collect some leaves or take a few minutes to read on a park bench? All of these nature-inspired ideas will make more of an impact if you are out there enjoying the real life version, too.
