How to Clean Your Living Room for Holiday Hosting

Prepare your living room for the annual festive family gathering with our helpful schedule.

If you’re planning to entertain a crowd this holiday season, a little preparation can go a long way. Cleaning your living room can take time, and since it will likely be the focal point of the celebration, get it ready in advance so you don’t feel rushed. Our helpful timeline will ensure your living room is clean, merry and bright for holiday entertaining.

One Month to Go
Assess your carpeting and upholstery. If carpets or rugs are heavily soiled, call in the professionals or rent a steam cleaner. If you have pets, use Febreze FABRIC Heavy Duty to remove those pet odours and leave behind a light, just-cleaned scent.

If you’re planning to decorate your living room for the holidays, now is the time to get started! We have seven great ideas for decking the halls.

One Week to Go
Take down the curtains and drapes to wash them. Depending on the type of fabric, you may be able to wash them at home; check the care instructions to be sure. Use Tide PODS with Febreze to clean them thoroughly and infuse them with a fresh, light scent. (If you don’t have time to launder them, use Febreze FABRIC to clean away odours.) Give blinds a good dusting with a Swiffer 360 Duster to reach the highest slats with ease.

This is also a good opportunity to declutter. To make your living room feel more spacious, clear out and donate old books or knickknacks you no longer wish to keep.

Two Days to Go
Turn your attention to dusting, spot cleaning and mopping. First, dust the walls, ceilings, fans, corners and air vents with a Swiffer 360 Duster. Then spot clean any marks on the walls and paintwork with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. If you have finished hardwood, use a Swiffer WetJet to trap dirt and dissolve any tough or sticky messes.

One Day to Go
You may be busy in the kitchen, but your guests will congregate in the living room. Start thinking about the living room layout and flow – you don’t want your guests tripping over themselves or each other because the room is crowded or cluttered.

You’ll likely need more seating to accommodate all your guests. While folding chairs will work in a pinch, large floor cushions make great seats for the kids to sit and play on, and they can be stashed behind the sofa when not in use.

The Morning Everyone Arrives
Fill the room with the scents, colours and textures of the holidays. Put out some bowls piled with clementines, and fill others with a mix of pinecones and cinnamon sticks. Then spray Febreze AIR in Fresh Twist Cranberry or Fresh Cut Pine to eliminate any lingering odours and make the room smell inviting.
