Home-grown vegetables are always welcome as an ingredient as a meal, but have you ever thought of them as part of your kitchen décor?
Use these lovely jars and bottles filled with colourful sliced fruit or plump vegetables to add a homey touch to your room. With a few household materials, this guide and filling suggestions, your veggies can truly be garden-to-table in no time!
Jars with lids and seals
Butter knife or wooden skewer
White vinegar or mineral oil
White craft glue
- Layer produce in jars in a decorative way. Keep fruits and vegetables separate.
- Use butter knife or flat end of skewer to move items around the bottom of jar. Continue layering, packing the jar full.
- Cover contents with white vinegar or mineral oil.
- Pipe a layer of glue inside threads of jar ring. Put lid in place and tighten.
- Cut fabric about 5 centimetres (2 inches) larger than the jar lid. Attach to jar using white glue.
- Gather fabric around lid and tie twine around the rim. Trim as needed.
Choose either fruits or vegetables, and keep them separate to maintain a unified look. Pick colours, shapes and sizes you like the most and adorn jars with:
Citrus: Lemons, limes and oranges
Berries: Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries
Other fruit: Kiwi, peaches and apples
Vegetables: Peppers, carrots, pearl onions, baby corn, fresh herbs, cucumbers and olives
- Slice citrus thin so you can see light through it. Apples and kiwi can be sliced or cut into wedges.
- Add banana peppers and jalapenos whole. Slice or cut bell peppers into pieces.
- Slice carrots and cucumbers into thick rings.
- Leave herbs and small vegetables like pearl onions, olives and baby corn whole.
