Easy Gift Ideas: Cookies in a Jar

Pack dry cookie mixes in decorated Mason jars and make quick, deliciously cute gifts.

Follow these easy instructions to make cookies in a jar to give to friends and family members as gifts this holiday season.

Step 1: Assembling the Jars
For each gift, assemble each jar using the instructions below. Read on for three recipe suggestions and decorating ideas.

  1. Wash and dry the Mason jar and lid
  2. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda and salt) in a small bowl. Carefully pour the mixture into the Mason jar using a canning funnel or a rolled piece of wax paper. Lightly tamp the flour mixture with an ice cream scoop (do this after adding each ingredient to help make sure all the ingredients fit in the jar)
  3. Layer the remaining ingredients (then tamp) one at a time. If needed, gently tap the jar on a hard surface to further settle the ingredients. Seal the jar by adding the lid
  4. Decorate your jars with hand-written notes, tags or ribbons
  5. Be sure to include the instructions (provided below) for baking the cookies with your jars

Step 2: Choose Your Type of Cookies

1. Cranberry Winter Cookies 
Bright red dried cranberries add a seasonal splash of colour to these chewy oatmeal cookies.

Ingredients
250 mL (1 cup) plus 30 mL (2 tbsp) all-purpose flour
2 mL (1/2 tsp) baking soda
2 mL (1/2 tsp) salt
125 mL (1/2 cup) rolled oats
75 mL (1/3 cup) packed brown sugar
75 mL (1/3 cup) granulated sugar
125 mL (1/2 cup) dried cranberries
125 mL (1/2 cup) white chocolate chips
125 mL (1/2 cup) chopped pecans (optional)

Cranberry Winter Cookies Instructions
Print or hand-write these instructions on a recipe card to go with the jar:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F). Prepare a cookie sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper
  2. In a medium bowl, beat together 125 mL (1/2 cup) softened butter, 1 egg and 5 mL (1 tsp) vanilla extract until fluffy
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed
  4. Drop by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet
  5. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until cookie edges start to brown. Let cool on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes, before removing to cool thoroughly on a wire rack

2. Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients
425 mL (1 3/4 cups) all-purpose flour
2 mL (1/2 tsp) salt
3 mL (3/4 tsp) baking soda
175 mL (3/4 cup) light brown sugar, packed
125 mL (1/2 cup) granulated sugar
375 mL (1 1/2 cups) chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk chocolate or a mixture of both)
125 mL (1/2 cup) chopped walnuts, pecans or cashews (optional)

Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C (375 F). Prepare a cookie sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper
  2. In a medium bowl, beat together 175 mL (3/4 cup) softened butter, 1 beaten egg and 5 mL (1 tsp) vanilla until fluffy
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed. (Add 125 mL (1/2 cup) butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips if desired)
  4. Drop by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are lightly browned
  5. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely

3. Polka Dot Cookies 
Give these yummy cookies a festive touch by using red and green candy-coated chocolate pieces. 

Ingredients
500 mL (2 cups) all-purpose flour
2 mL (1/2 tsp) salt
175 mL (3/4 tsp) baking soda
175 mL (3/4 cup) light brown sugar, packed
50 mL (1/4 cup) granulated sugar
375 mL (1 1/2 cups) candy-coated chocolate pieces

Polka Dot Cookies Instructions
Print or hand-write these instructions on a recipe card to go with the jar:

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C (375 F). Prepare a cookie sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper
  2. In a medium bowl, beat together 175 mL (3/4 cup) softened butter, 1 beaten egg and 5 mL (1 tsp) vanilla until fluffy
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed
  4. Drop by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until cookies are golden brown
  5. Cool on cookie sheet for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks to finish cooling

Step 3: Decorate the Cookie Jars
Use this simple idea to make your Cookies in a Jar look extra-special. 

Materials
17 1/2-centimetre (7-inch) diameter circle cut from lightweight fabric in a seasonal colour or design
46 to 61 centimetres (18 to 24 inches) of coordinating ribbon or rickrack

Instructions

  1. Once you have sealed the jar of dry cookie mix, centre the fabric circle over the top of the lid
  2. Smooth the circle down over the top of the jar, then wrap ribbon or rickrack around the fabric and tie it in a tight bow
  3. Optional: Add a second piece of ribbon threaded with a jingle bell, a small plastic pinecone and/or a recipe card with the cookie recipe printed on it
