Shrimp Mac n’ Cheese

Take this gooey comfort food to a delicious new level by adding plump shrimp.

Homemade macaroni and cheese is simple, scrumptious and kid-friendly. Add shrimp for a fresh and healthy take on this family favourite.

Shrimp Macaroni & Cheese

455 grams (1 pound) elbow macaroni
30 mL (2 tbsp) unsalted butter
50 mL (1/4 cup) all-purpose flour
750 mL (3 cups) skim milk
500 mL (2 cups) shredded cheddar cheese
550 mL (2 1/4 cup) grated Parmesan cheese
455 grams (1 pound) frozen shrimp, chopped and cooked
125 mL (1/2 cup) panko bread crumbs
30 mL (2 tbsp) fresh parsley, chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste


  1. Preheat oven to 200 C (400 F). Bring a large pot of salted water to a bowl, then stir in pasta and cook according to the directions
  2. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly. Add milk, then whisk gently until smooth. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper
  3. Place strained and cooled macaroni in a 23-by- 33 centimetre (9-by- 13 inch) baking dish. Pour the sauce over the macaroni and mix well with a wooden spoon. Stir in cheddar cheese, 500 mL (2 cups) Parmesan cheese and shrimp
  4. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese, panko bread crumbs and parsley. Bake for 15 minutes

Tip: Experiment with other pasta shapes, like shells, penne and ziti. Or mix them together for a fun look and texture the whole family will love!
