Ingredients
1 loaf challah or French bread, sliced thick
3 apples, peeled, de-seeded and sliced thinly
175 mL (3/4 cup) brown sugar
45 mL (3 tablespoons) butter, melted
8 eggs, whipped
250 mL (1 cup) milk
10 mL (2 teaspoons) ground cinnamon
5 mL (1 teaspoon) ground nutmeg
5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract
5 mL (1 teaspoon) salt
Powdered sugar, to taste
Maple syrup, to taste
Instructions
- Layer bread and apple slices in a 23x33 centimetre (9x13 inch) baking dish, making sure apple slices are evenly distributed between the sliced bread
- Sprinkle brown sugar over the bread and apple slices
- Pour butter evenly over the top of the brown sugar
- In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread, making sure to thoroughly saturate the bread
- Cover dish with plastic wrap to seal
- Place in the fridge for a few hours or overnight
- Preheat oven to 180 C (350 F)
- Remove plastic wrap and bake for 30 minutes (or long enough for the bottom of the dish to be cooked)
- Remove from oven and cool for about 5-10 minutes
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, then slice and serve
