Chocolate covered pretzels have been a fan favourite treat for decades. Let’s reimagine new twists on these delicious treats — with more colour and crunch — and take the age-old chocolate dipped pretzel to a whole new level. Get the kids involved (an apron or old t-shirt will probably be in order) and let them come up with their own concoctions. Who knows? Maybe pretzels, chocolate and chicken nuggets are the perfect delicacy.
A Twist on the Classic Pretzel
These ideas work best with the classic pretzel rod, as it provides the sturdiness needed to hold the chocolate and additional toppings. Plus, pretzel rods offer the right balance of saltiness to pair with the sweet toppings. So put away the potato chips and bring on the pretzels!
PB & C
Peanut butter and chocolate pair very well with the salty crunch of a pretzel. You won’t buy candy bars ever again after you taste this creamy covered pretzel.
Melt chocolate baking discs over a double boiler or in the microwave. Once the chocolate is silky smooth, dip the pretzel 3/4 of the way in. Cool on a baking sheet or on foil in the refrigerator until solid.
Tip: Get the scoop on melting chocolate in Chocolate Basics: Dipping Chocolate.
Next, spread a thin layer of peanut butter over the chocolate and roll in a mix of mini chocolate chips and crushed peanuts. Pair these with chocolate covered strawberries for a fresh dessert combination.
You’ll be busy eating, but don’t forget to soak your bowl in warm water and Dawn Dish Soap to make clean up easy.
Birthday Cake for One
Who needs a whole cake when you can have your very own birthday pretzel? These decorative rods make for fun treats at parties — and kids join in on the fun creating, too.
Cover 3/4 of a pretzel rod with chocolate frosting. Next, toss on coloured or chocolate sprinkles so they stick to the pretzel, but leave about 1 inch of the pretzel uncovered. For the final (and most delicious) touch, stick a mini cupcake to the uncovered top of the pretzel. No one will be able to resist this adorable creation, and they’re a wonderful way to say “Happy Birthday.”
Cereal is great for breakfast, but it’s also a great ingredient in a creative pretzel snack. To stick to the chocolate covered pretzel theme, choose a chocolate crisped rice cereal. The cereal is not only tasty — and adds texture and crunch — but its small-sized pieces stick to the pretzel perfectly.
Dip your pretzel rod 3/4 of the way into sweetened condensed milk.
Tip: Be sure the condensed milk is sweetened for flavour and not the evaporated kind.
Shake off the excess milk and dip or roll the pretzel into the cereal. If you really want to go for that super chocolaty taste, add mini chocolate chips in with the cereal before dipping the pretzel into the mix.
