Simple 7-layer bars make it easy to toss in your favourite sweet ingredient.

These delicious treats need no special equipment: Just spread layers of goodies in a baking pan (or pre-made crust; we won’t tell) and bake.

7-layer bars have been a staple of picnics, brown-bag lunches and bake sales for decades — and with good reason: they’re as deliciously irresistible as they are simple to make. Here’s a recipe for the original, plus some utterly delectable variations.

Classic 7-Layer Bars

Makes 36 bars

Prep time: 5 minutes

Bake time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/3 cups shredded coconut

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F
  • Mix together the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Press evenly over the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch baking pan.
  • Layer the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and walnuts on top. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the layers. Sprinkle with coconut
  • Bake bars until edges are golden brown, about 25 minutes.
  • Cool on rack before cutting. (Toss the tin and they’ll be none the wiser; or transfer the crust into your own glassware) Store, tightly covered, at room temperature
