It’s that time again: The holiday stress has officially kicked in! Between the dinner preparations and keeping schedules in order, holiday gifting is likely the last thing on your mind.

We’re here to help with our simplified DIY ideas, like this cookie-in-a-jar present. It’s easy to assemble and one that everyone on your list will enjoy this holiday season.

Step 1: Assembly
For each gift, assemble jars using the instructions below. And keep reading for 3 recipe suggestions and decorating ideas.

  1. Carefully hand wash a Mason jar and its lid with Dawn dish soap, dry completely

  1. Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt) in a small bowl. Carefully pour mixture into the jar using a canning funnel or rolled piece of wax paper (whoever you give the gift to will add the wet ingredients, so be sure to give them the recipe)
  2. Lightly tamp flour mixture with an ice cream scoop or spoon, repeat after each ingredient to make sure all ingredients fit in the jar
  3. Layer remaining ingredients (then tamp) one at a time. If needed, gently tap jar on a hard surface to further settle the ingredients. Seal jar with the lid
  4. Decorate your jars with handwritten notes, tags or ribbons
  5. Be sure to include accompanying baking instructions (provided below) for the cookies with your jars!

Step 2: Choose Your Cookies

1. Cranberry Winter Cookies
Bright red dried cranberries add a festive splash of colour to these chewy oatmeal cookies.

Jar Ingredients
250 mL (1 cup) plus 30 mL (2 tablespoons) all-purpose flour
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) baking soda
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) salt
125 mL (1/2 cup) rolled oats
75 mL (1/3 cup) brown sugar, packed
75 mL (1/3 cup) granulated sugar
125 mL (1/2 cup) dried cranberries
125 mL (1/2 cup) white chocolate chips
125 mL (1/2 cup) chopped pecans (optional)

Additional Ingredients
125 mL (1/2 cup) butter, softened
1 egg
5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract 

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F). Prepare a cookie sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper
  2. In a medium bowl, beat together 125 mL (1/2 cup) softened butter, 1 egg and 5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract until fluffy
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed
  4. Drop by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet
  5. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until cookie edges start to brown. Let cool on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes, before removing to cool thoroughly on a wire rack

2. Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

Jar Ingredients
425 mL (1 3/4 cups) all-purpose flour
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) salt
3.7 mL (3/4 teaspoon) baking soda
175 mL (3/4 cup) light brown sugar, packed
125 mL (1/2 cup) granulated sugar
375 mL (1 1/2 cups) chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk chocolate or a mixture of both)
125 mL (1/2 cup) chopped walnuts, pecans or cashews (optional)

Additional Ingredients
175 mL (3/4 cup) butter, softened
1 egg
5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C (375 F). Prepare a cookie sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper
  2. In a medium bowl, beat together 175 mL (3/4 cup) softened butter, 1 beaten egg and 5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract until fluffy
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed. (Optional: Substitute 125 mL [1/2 cup] butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips for 125 mL [1/2 cup] of the chocolate chips)
  4. Drop by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are lightly browned
  5. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely

3. Polka Dot Cookies
Give these yummy cookies a cheerful holiday touch by using red and green candy-coated chocolate pieces.

Jar Ingredients
500 mL (2 cups) all-purpose flour
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) salt
3.7 mL (3/4 teaspoon) baking soda
175 mL (3/4 cup) light brown sugar, packed
50 mL (1/4 cup) granulated sugar
375 mL (1 1/2 cups) candy-coated chocolate pieces

Additional Ingredients
175 mL (3/4 cup) butter, softened
1 egg
5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C (375 F). Prepare a cookie sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper
  2. In a medium bowl, beat together 175 mL (3/4 cup) softened butter, 1 beaten egg and 5 mL (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract until fluffy
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed
  4. Drop by heaping spoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until cookies are golden brown
  5. Cool on cookie sheet for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks to finish cooling

4. Caramel Pecan Cookies

Jar Ingredients
500 mL (2 cups) all-purpose flour
5 mL (1 teaspoon) baking soda
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) salt
250 mL (1 cup) white chocolate chips
250 mL (1 cup) caramel chunks
250 mL (1 cup) toasted pecan pieces

Additional Ingredients
250 mL (1 cup) brown sugar, packed
125 mL (1/2 cup) granulated sugar
175 mL (3/4 cup) butter, softened
1 egg
10 mL (2 teaspoons) vanilla extract 

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C (350 F)
  2. Mix together 175 mL (3/4 cup) of butter and both sugars until fluffy. Add 1 egg and 10 mL (2 teaspoons) vanilla extract and beat in until combined fully
  3. Add the entire jar of dry cookie mix to the butter mixture, stirring until well mixed
  4. Add chocolate chips and caramel chunks, stir until just combined
  5. Roll millilitres (tablespoons) of dough mixture into round balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle and lightly press the pecans onto the dough balls
  6. Place the cookie sheet to the freezer for 5-10 minutes, until chilled
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the tops of the cookies start to brown. Let the cookies cool for about 5 minutes before enjoying

Step 3: Decorate
Use this simple idea to make your cookies-in-a-jar look extra special!

Materials
17.5-centimetre (7-inch) diameter circle cut from lightweight fabric in a seasonal colour or design
46 to 61 centimetres (18 to 24 inches) of coordinating ribbon

Printed or handwritten recipe card (with small hole punched in top corner)

Instructions

  1. Once you have sealed the jar of dry cookie mix, centre the fabric circle over top of the lid
  2. String ribbon through the respective recipe card through the hole punch
  3. Smooth the circle down over the top of the jar, then wrap ribbon around fabric and tie into a tight bow

Optional:
Add a second piece of ribbon threaded with a jingle bell, small plastic pine cone or other festive décor of your choosing!
