When it comes time to start putting away seasonal clothes or clothes you don’t wear often, skip the mothballs! Eliminate the fumes and chemicals of traditional mothballs by using these simple, natural alternatives.

1. Cedar Chips
Use cedar chips as a useful alternative for protecting fabrics in your closet from moths.

  • Hang cedar blocks and cedar chip balls in closets from the hangers with string.
  • Place small plastic containers filled with cedar chips throughout the closet.
  • Replace the chips every year or when the smell noticeably lightens, for freshness.
  • Find cedar chips at any major home supply retail store.

2. Airtight Containers or Garment Bags
Seal up clothes in containers as a preventive measure and to free up space in the closet.

  • Use airtight containers or bags, sealing your favourite pieces while they’re out of season to create a barrier that blocks out moths.
  • Try large zip-close garment bags as another option.

3. Clean Pet Crates Regularly
Moths are drawn to animal crates. Prevent moths being from coming in the house by routinely cleaning out all the surfaces pets use.

  • Cages and bedding can serve as hatching grounds for moth eggs.
  • Deep-clean cages that have any type of shredded paper with soap and water on a weekly basis.

4. Satchels of Lavender
Most moths tend to avert the scent of lavender. Simply add a few branches to a cloth satchel and place a few throughout the closet, and then enjoy the fragrant aroma.
