From planning the holiday meal to cleaning before the guests arrive, holiday party preparations can make this time of the year extra stressful. Take a deep breath, embrace the chaos and know that you’re not alone – we’ve all had these thoughts!
1. Should I make more food?
How many servings does this mashed potato recipe contain? And do I really expect a teenage boy’s portion to count as “one” serving?
2. Where’s everyone going to sleep?
The guests will have to play rock-paper-scissors to decide who gets the spare room. (At least the sheets on the pullout couch will be clean and soft. Thanks, Tide PODS!)
3. Why is gift shopping so hard?
What do you get for the uncle who has everything? Socks? Drawer organizer? Belt sander? I give up. Everyone is getting gift cards.
4. What will we all do after dinner if it rains?
Please don’t let it rain. There are not enough indoor games in the world to entertain the little ones. Last year my nieces covered the walls with crayon. Thank goodness I had a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on hand!
5. Ugh, what’s that smell?
Did the dog get on the sofa again? Time to break out the Febreze FABRIC. It’s the only thing that gets rid of that dog smell on the cushions.
6. I think there’s time for one last pass around the living room.
Man, did I do a good job this year or what? Decorations, candles, fully trimmed tree – it looks just like it did when I was little. I think I have time to dust the mantle again before everyone gets here. Where’s my Swiffer 360 Duster?
7. Here they come!
I love the holidays. We should all get together more often.
8. Is that smoke?
Uh oh – it’s the green bean casserole. I knew I should have taken it out sooner. It’s fine, it’s fine. I’ll chip off the black bits, and no one will even notice. OK, that’s not working. I’ll just say it’s “charred.” It sounds sophisticated. Everyone will be doing it next year.
9. Look at all that food!
I feel guilty just looking at it. I know there’s a table underneath all those plates and platters. Maybe I overdid it. But better too much than not enough – right?
10. What. A. Mess.
Seriously, it looks like 20 people just inhaled 50 pounds of food. Oh wait, that actually happened. If I get out the Dawn dish soap maybe someone else will take the hint and help me wash the dishes. Anyone? No? Come on, people – I promise that Dawn will help make it quick.
11. I can hardly keep my eyes open.
How long until everyone goes home? I’ve been baking, cooking and cleaning for 36 hours straight, and I’m ready to drop.
12. Will anyone notice if I go to bed?
I doubt it. They’re all asleep on the couch anyway.
13. The house is too quiet.
Well, the holidays are officially over for another year. This is going to sound crazy, but when can we do it all over again?
