Beat the Winter Blues: 6 Family Activities for Colder Months

Don’t let cold weather stop the family fun. Try out one of these 6 indoor activities!

Keeping your kids busy for hours indoors isn’t always easy – especially if they are bursting with energy. If you’re looking to keep them off to the couch and away from the TV, you may have to come up with some unique (and fun!) ideas to keep them engaged.

Here are 6 family-friendly, indoor activities for when your kids are stuck at home with nothing to do.

1. Showtime
Put on a magic act, a puppet show or anything that involves props, other performers and an audience – including you. To make an instant stage, stack packages of Charmin or Bounty and cover with a sheet. You can even create your own puppet theatre using old cardboard boxes … find out how!

2. Cooking
Let your little chefs help you out with the basics. It’s an opportunity to teach them a little about cooking. Baking muffins, cookies and pizza are all kid-friendly. You can even use recipes from a cookbook designed for your child’s age group.

3. Dance Party
Take turns playing everyone’s favourite music for a family dance-a-thon. If your child is taking lessons in ballet or another dance style, you can take this time to practice the steps with them.

4. Arts and Crafts
Make and test out paper planes and other creations. Get crafty and experiment with art supplies found in your house. From creating handmade puppets to fun DIY tic-tac-toe games, your possibilities are endless.

5. Games
Charades and hide-and-seek are great ways to spend a day indoors. A scavenger hunt (hide items and place small items to find around the house) can be loads of fun if you get creative with your hiding spots and treasure.

6. Science Experiments
Make a papier-mâché volcano and let it erupt with a mix of baking soda and vinegar.

While it might not seem like there’s a lot to entertain the kiddos in your home, with a little creativity, you can get them up and active all winter long. If you have any ideas to keep your kids moving, leave them in the comments section below!
