Reinvigorate Your Wardrobe This Fall Season

No need to overhaul your entire closet this season. Introduce a new palette to refresh your look.

As the season changes, it’s time to pull out the cold-weather clothing and clear out your closet. As you exchange T-shirts, shorts and sandals for coats, hats and cozy sweaters, take some time to update your wardrobe basics with a fresh color palette.

Organize and Declutter
Since winter wear takes up more space with bulky jackets and lots of layers, the change of seasons presents a perfect opportunity to let go of some items and make room for new additions. The best way to do this is to try everything on. Recruit an honest friend, schedule a date and try on fall and winter outfits in front of a full-length mirror, in a room with lots of natural light. Ask your friend to provide a set of fresh eyes and make suggestions for new outfit combinations.

Evaluate each item of clothing, and start making piles: “Must Keep,” “Toss/Donate” and “Undecided.” Focus first on the must-keep items. If they fit well, try to create new updated ensembles. Do you need a new item (i.e., the perfect pair of skinny jeans) to complete the outfit? Will it work with what’s fashionable this season? This question is less about the latest fashion trends and more about an overall style that suits you and the latest fall-winter color schemes.

Bring on the Color!
Every year, fashion designers release their new clothing collections on runways during fashion weeks around the world, from New York to Paris, London to Hong Kong. In turn, Pantone’s yearly fashion color report influences the hues found in apparel and home décor. Use these runway collections and the color report as inspiration for adding new pieces to your current wardrobe. Of course, factor in your own style and color preferences as well!

Which shades are most popular this year? Look for warmer tones interspersed with brighter colors: deep teal and wine mixed with grenadine red, mustard yellow and fresh blue. And don’t feel like you have to buy an entire season’s worth of new shirts and pants to keep up with current color trends. The fall basics (a scarf, necklace or purse) in the right shade can add the perfect pop of color for a classic gray blouse.

Arrange your “Must Keep” and “Undecided” items by color. Take an inventory and note which colors you’re currently lacking that you’d like to incorporate – and keep this list handy during your next shopping trip. Then make a final decision for “Undecided” garments and gather your “Toss/Donate” clothes for the trashcan or the donation bin. Finally, pack up summer clothes and label the boxes to store until next spring.
