Back to Basics: How to Recover from Trend Overload

Here's a head-to-toe look that is easy, fashionable and will never go out of style.

Everyone always wants to know about the latest trends. But sometimes it can get overwhelming. Between magazines, Pinterest and Twitter, there are so many people telling you what to wear each season. The advice is usually great and makes you want to go on a shopping spree. But there's nothing wrong with taking a break from the trends and sticking to your basics. Often, a classic outfit can be just as chic as a current runway look. Here's a head-to-toe option that is easy, fashionable and will never go out of style:

1. Start With a White Button-Down Blouse
Every woman should have at least one of these in her closet. Go for a basic style either in cotton or silk. You don't want anything too tight or too oversized.

2. Add a Dark Skinny or Straight-Leg Jean
A mid-rise is ideal so you can tuck your top in. Avoid any trendy details like embroidery or distressed tears. You want a classic wash that will last you for years.

3. Slip Into a Pair of Stilettos
You can never go wrong with a black pump. A pointy style will help lengthen your legs. While kitten heels come and go, and 5-inch styles are very on trend right now, a more moderate 3 1/2- to 4-inch heel will take you from season to season.

4. Invest in a Black Leather Handbag
If you spend a little extra money here, you can wear the bag for years to come. Just steer clear from any trendy hardware. You want the style to be as classic as possible.

5. Accessorize with Delicate Gold Jewellery
Statement necklaces are incredibly fun to wear, but sentimental pieces are forever. Find a gold necklace that has special meaning to you, whether it's your son's initial or an infinity charm that represents your 10th anniversary. You can also add a couple of gold bracelets and stud earrings — another piece of jewellery that will never go out of style.

6. Finish Off Your Look With a Pop of Colour on Your Lips.
Sure, we said stay away from trend overload, but this is the easiest (and most affordable!) way to make your classic outfit current. Whether it's pink, orange or fire-engine red, a bold lipstick will elevate your basic, but oh so chic, style.

Quick Tip : You can never go wrong with a classic white button-down shirt.
