6 Ways to Refresh Your Makeup for Summer

6 Ways to Refresh Your Makeup for Summer

Here are six makeup recommendations for long-lasting, summer-perfect cosmetics.

By: Amber Katz

Summer means lighter formulations, brighter colors, matte blends and long-lasting finishes. Of course, there are many options to choose from whether you want to go bright or natural this season. Here are six of my favourite recommendations for doing both.

1. CC Cream
Say goodbye to last year’s BB creams. Summer's new staple is CC cream — a lightweight colour-correcting tinted moisturizer that offers sun protection and anti-aging benefits. I'd slather this stuff on pre-beach or simply with mascara and a punchy lip if I were running late for work. Try: Olay Total Effects 7 CC Cream.

2. SPF-Infused Everything
If you just can't get your daily dose of sun protection via your moisturizer or a separate SPF, opt for a long-wearing foundation with sunscreen which packs a powerful punch of staying power (even in the most humid conditions) and includes SPF 20.

Tip: Apply some to a cotton ball and keep it in your purse in a plastic baggie for touch-ups throughout the day.

3. Face Sprays
A small spritzer can do wonders to refresh your look. After a particularly gruelling subway situation, beach day or even a corporate meeting, a quick spritz on your skin refreshes you and livens up your makeup. Just a small travel-size spritzer filled with water is all you need. If you want to get fancy fresh about it, mix in a little neroli essence (an oil produced from the blossom of a bitter orange tree) or aloe for a soothing effect and spray away if you notice your makeup getting cakey.

4. Emerald Eyes
It's been a while since the Pantone hue of the year has been so flattering in the eye-makeup arena, so let's make the most of our emerald offerings! Try a thin line eyeliner for an on-trend cat eye. For a longer-lasting look, apply a matching shade of eye shadow on top of your liner with an angled brush.

5. Tinted Lip Balms
This year’s new batch of tinted balms is neck-in-neck with CC cream as the latest must-have cosmetic. And for good reason: They're beyond easy! A tinted balm can be applied in a moving vehicle and still look totally deliberate.

Tip: On the road and need a blush pick-me-up? Dab a bit of the balm on your cheeks for a natural flush.

6. Lip Stains
I keep lip stains by my front door for a quick application every time I leave my apartment. Why? Even if I apply another layer of my favourite lipstick, tinted balm or gloss, when that eventually wears away, I'll still have a stain underneath to ensure my lips are perfectly pigmented for hours.

What makeup are you planning to rock this summer?
