New Year, New Look

Celebrity hairstylist Enrico Mariotti shares his tips for a new look in the new year.

The start of a new year is the best time for a new haircut. A new look can change your outlook and give you confidence to take on the new year with the right attitude.

Go Lighter and Softer
Use the opening of the year to take dull, dry and unruly hair to naturally glossy, silky locks.

To get there, you need to rethink the way you treat your hair every day. A mild shampoo created to suit the hair's needs (don’t blindly pick out your shampoos), a gentle conditioner that hydrates without weighing hair down, and masks that penetrate your hair to regenerate and restructure can all help individually; but together, they can do amazing things.

Avoid brushing the hair too vigorously, as this weakens it. Also avoid washing hair in very hot water, and excessive use of hair straighteners and curling irons without the proper protection.

Take Your Haircut Seriously
It’s important to entrust your hair to an expert. Every hairstyle should be tailored to your hair type, face shape and also the time available to dedicate to styling every day. It takes very little to make a difference.

For a big impact, try transitioning from layered hair or changing a straight style to a wavy style, perhaps with lightened tips to give your hair movement and volume.

A Hint of Colour Does the Job
If brown is too boring for you and blond is too predictable, try a new colour. This comes with a warning, though. Radical changes from light to dark, or perhaps to red, require a good dose of courage. If that’s a risk you don’t want to take, try a more subtle change.

Opt for a softer solution by deciding on a hint of colour that brings light without distorting your image: coppery highlights on brown hair, a sun-bleached effect on fair hair and shades from cinnamon to chocolate for dark hair. A subtle play of highlights is what works for a natural and sparkling look.
