Hair Care 101: The Basics for You and Your Family

It can be a challenge to keep every family member’s hair clean and smooth. We share our best tips.

Whether you’re washing your toddler’s hair or helping your teen find the right products, your family’s hair care regimen probably isn’t without its tangles! Here are our six expert tips for smoothing out the wash-and-rinse routine (and making sure your own hair looks great, too!).

1. Opt for Children-Specific Formulas
Children have a thinner outer layer of skin and produce less keratin (a waterproofing protein) than adults, which is why shampoo for kids is designed to be gentle, nondrying, soap free and pH balanced.

2. Let Them Do Some of the Work
Research has shown that if a child brushes their hair themselves from an early age, they’re more likely to have healthy hair as adults. To avoid tangles after bathing, comb hair before shampooing or, for children with longer hair, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle while conditioner is working its magic.

3. Condition, Condition, Condition!
Older children and teenagers should get into the habit of using a shampoo and conditioner that prevents dandruff, moisturizes their scalps and smooths dry, frizzy hair. Have them try Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner to keep hair healthy and tangle free.

4. Beware Damp Hair
When the body is chilled, the blood vessels in the nose and throat constrict, which can allow common viruses to multiply and develop into symptoms. So don’t leave your kids’ hair damp for too long. Get older kids into the habit of using the gentle heat option on the hair dryer to dry their hair. With little ones, use a soft towel to get rid of excess moisture.

5. Don’t Forget Your Hair!
We know it takes a lot of effort to keep everyone clean and happy, but don’t neglect you! If your own hair needs a boost, we recommend Pantene Micellar Revitalize Shampoo and Conditioner, which gently purify and nourish hair for lightweight volume. If your hair seems extra dry, apply Pantene Damage Detox Weekly Rehab Crème once a week to seal damaged cuticles and leave your hair with a brilliant shine.
