4 Steps to Gorgeous Hair Colour at Home

4 Steps to Gorgeous Hair Colour at Home

Skip the salon — follow our 4 easy tips for professional-looking colour at home.

By: Lynette Hernandez

There’s no need to run to the hair salon every time you need a colour touch-up. We have some easy tips on how you can get gorgeous results at home and at a fraction of the cost.

First, pick out the right hair colour for your needs. Are you looking for 100 per cent grey coverage with subtle tones and highlights? For a bold new hue, try Vidal Sassoon’s London Luxe collection.

In addition to your at-home colouring kit, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Old shirt
  • Towel
  • Lotion or petroleum jelly
  • Comb
  • Large safety clip
  • Hair clip

1. Prep
Put on an old shirt, then grab a towel and wrap it around your neck and shoulders. To avoid getting dye on your face and ears, apply the lotion or petroleum jelly around your hairline and over your ears. Now that you’re all set up, follow the colour mixing instructions on the box.

2. Part
Using a comb, part your hair down the middle and create a section just big enough so the dye can be worked through.

3. Paint it On, Pull it Through
Begin by applying the hair colour at the roots, and then work your way down to the tips. After the colour has been applied to that section, clip the section to the top of your head. Continue separating hair into sections and applying the colour in the same fashion: beginning at the roots and working your way down, always making sure you didn’t miss any spots before moving onto the next section.

4. Process
Now that you are done applying the hair colour, it’s time to let the colour process. The directions on the box will usually give you a small time frame. We recommend waiting the full time for the best colour absorption, especially if you have any grey hairs. When it is time to rinse off the colour, make sure to use cool water — it helps the colour set.
