As much as the ponytail gets a bad rap for being the “lazy” hairstyle, variations on the classic pony can range from fun and flirty to chic and sophisticated. It’s all in the styling. One of my favourite pulled-back looks is the wrap ponytail. By covering up the elastic with a smooth section of hair, your ponytail can go from ho-hum to stylish in seconds. Here are my four favourite ways to wear a wrap ponytail.
1. The Classic Crown Wrap
To create this look, smooth your hair into a ponytail at the crown of your head. Once the ponytail is secure, wrap a 2.5- to 4-centimetre (1- to 1.5-inch) section from the underneath of the ponytail around the elastic (at the base) of the ponytail until you can tuck the ends of the section underneath into the elastic itself or use a bobby pin to secure the “wrap” in place.
2. The Top-Knot Wrap
This is styled much like the classic crown wrap. Instead of focusing on the ponytail, pull your hair into a ponytail at the very top of your head. Leave out a small section of hair and wrap the rest of the ponytail around itself until you create a bun. Secure the bun with bobby pins and then wrap the remaining section of hair around the base of the bun. Très chic!
3. The Braid Wrap
This is a fun departure from the traditional wrap ponytail. Instead of using a small section of hair to wrap around the base, braid that section first. To achieve this look, put your hair in a ponytail like you normally would, take a small section of hair at the bottom of the ponytail and make a three-strand braid, then wrap the braid around the elastic. Either tuck into the bottom of the ponytail or secure with an elastic.
4. The Inside-Out Ponytail
This one reminds me of my grade school days. Put all of your hair in a low, loose ponytail and secure with an elastic. After securing, loosen the ponytail base with your fingers by pulling the elastic outward. Starting underneath, put a few fingers up through the space between the elastic and your scalp, creating a small hole. Flip the ponytail upwards and pull it down through the opening. Voilà, a super classy look!
Tip: One of the easiest ways to keep a ponytail looking fun and fresh is to keep it loose. Don't stress too much about making it perfectly smooth and tame — some of the chicest looks these days are “effortless” and look slightly messy. It adds character to your overall style.
