Although scalp problems are associated with a range of different symptoms, the most common symptoms are dryness, tightness and itchiness. If you’re bothered by dandruff, you’re not alone: According to Dr. Rendon, more than 50% of people suffer from dandruff at least once in their life, making it the most common of all scalp problems.
Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to get a healthy scalp again. Here are Dr. Rendon’s top tips.
Shampoo Hair for a Healthy Scalp
Maintaining a healthy scalp starts in the shower. “Shampooing is the easiest and most effective way to clean your scalp and keep it healthy,” says Dr. Rendon. “The shampooing action invigorates follicles, reduces the excessive sebum buildup that can lead to dandruff and oiliness and prevents excess skin from accumulating on the scalp.”
For best results, look for a shampoo formulated with zinc pyrithione, such as Head & Shoulders® Classic Clean Shampoo. Zinc pyrithione reduces the amount of fungus on the scalp, which is a leading cause of dandruff. Other contributors include scalp oils, diet, stress and your individual susceptibility to skin irritation.
Worried that a dandruff shampoo will be too harsh on your hair? Don’t be: Head & Shoulders shampoos are packed with moisturizers, and they’re gentle enough to use on colour-treated hair. Plus, Head & Shoulders isn’t just for dandruff. “Modern hair- and scalp-care products, such as Head & Shoulders, help create a healthy scalp while getting rid of dryness, itchiness, redness and irritation,” says Dr. Rendon. If you’re looking for even more moisture, try Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Care formula, which soothes and moisturizes while leaving hair with 50% less frizz.
Massage for a Healthy Scalp
Did you know that massaging your scalp can help relieve scalp problems such as dandruff? First, wash your hair with Head & Shoulders Ocean Lift Shampoo, which rejuvenates your hair and scalp with a sea mineral essence. Massage the shampoo into your scalp for a minute or two to help loosen dead skin cells and increase circulation to the scalp. Rinse, and then follow with Head & Shoulders Ocean Lift Conditioner to maintain protection for your hair and scalp.
How to Avoid Scalp Problems
In addition to using the right hair-care products, eating well and getting regular exercise are two things that can help you maintain a healthy scalp. “Bad nutrition — including crash diets — has been shown to have a negative impact on hair quality and may even cause hair loss,” says Dr. Rendon. Consume a balanced diet that includes zinc, B vitamins, essential fatty acids, biotin, protein and iron to help promote lustrous locks and a healthy scalp.
When styling your hair, always remember that less is more. “Minimize the amount of styling products you use and the frequency with which you use them, as many of them can contribute to the buildup of oils on your scalp,” advises Dr. Rendon. Avoid overwashing or exposing your hair to excessive heat, which can damage hair, and try products from the 11 different Head & Shoulders collections, including volume-building, smoothing and extra-hydrating formulas. Finally, too much sun can irritate a sensitive scalp. (And, if you’re not careful, too much sun can lead to burns!) Try to reduce the amount of time you spend in the midday sun (when UV rays are especially strong), and be sure to wear a hat whenever you plan to be outside for long periods of time.
