Allergen Alert: Plan Ahead for Spring
Help keep the sneezing and sniffles at bay.
Every year, millions of people suffer from the symptoms of seasonal allergies, such as congestion, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. With spring right around the corner, there's no time like the present to put a protection plan into place for your family. Here are some simple steps to help keep you and your family comfortable and sneeze-free.

Use Your Air-Conditioning

Opening windows to air out your home for spring can bring in outdoor allergens such as pollen and mold. Use your air conditioner to cycle fresh air through your home and filter out irritants. Pollen counts are usually highest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so if you really want outdoor-fresh air, open your windows in the early morning or evening.

Try an Air Purifier

A single unit can clean the air in your home in one or multiple rooms, depending upon the size of the unit. Air purifiers are designed to control pollen, dust mites and other allergens.

Clean, Clean, Clean!

When you're doing your spring-cleaning, don't forget the air vents. Dust and grime can build up over the winter and aggravate spring allergies. Also remember the tops of bookcases, door frames, ceiling fan blades and other seldom-seen places where dust can build up.

Change Your Routine

If you normally shower in the morning, plan to shower and wash your hair before bed instead. During the day, pollen can collect on your clothes, skin and hair, aggravating your allergies even if your windows are closed.
Don't forget to guard against indoor allergens as well. Here's what you'll want to watch out for:

Dust mites: To reduce dust mites, keep your indoor humidity below 50 percent. Wash sheets and bedding weekly in hot water and dry on high heat.

Animal dander: Unless you remove the pet from your home, there is no way you can totally eliminate animal dander. Frequent carpet cleaning can help, as can using a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate) vacuum filter. Bathing your pet weekly or biweekly can also help.

Mold: High humidity and dampness are the primary causes of mold, so adequate ventilation is the best way to prevent it, particularly in basements and bathrooms. Mold can be easily cleaned using a commercial detergent and water. Don't forget to wear gloves!
