Those with black, brown or fair complexions usually wear cool tones best. Soft berry and wine reds with a blue undertone, mocha brown as well as sheer pinks with gold shimmer are best on fair skin. Stay away from hot pinks, as they tend to overpower pale skin. A rich red with a blue undertone, deep plums, wine, berry or any shade of brown best suit dark skin.
Warm tones are best suited to those with medium and olive skin tones. Deep reds are very flattering on medium complexions, as are brown-reds and rich, deep pinks. Browns that lean toward caramel coffee with yellow or pink undertones are also flattering, but pale browns can make skin look ashy. Olive skin is best enhanced with deep brown-reds and dark berries, but not orange- or pink-reds. Plum, berry and rose with strong yellow undertones are also great on olive skin, as are shades of brown that are chocolate in flavour.
Are there rules for colours? “I don't like rules for makeup,” says Aharon. “You can make any colour look good on someone if you use the right shade. Anyone can wear dark red as long as they choose a red that complements their skin tone, either warm or cool.” It’s just that easy — and there’ll be no more tossed-aside lipsticks.
