Cold-Weather Workouts
Shift your exercise routine into high gear with these outdoor activities.
It may be cold outside, but that's no reason not to work out! Here are five ways to stay active and get moving, no matter what the temperature.

Take a Hike

Winter can be a beautiful season, but how would you know if you stayed indoors? One of the best ways to enjoy Mother Nature is to take a leisurely stroll (or, if you're in the mood, a more vigorous hike). Spend an afternoon exploring trails at a nearby nature preserve, or else simply walk around your neighbourhood. Just bring plenty of water and bundle up in layers.

Remember, winter may bring fewer daylight hours, but don't let that stop you from getting out for a brisk walk after dark. You can buy a reflector vest or reflector tape at most sporting-goods stores to adhere to your coat, and carry a heavy-duty flashlight, such as a Duracell® Explorer, with Duracell CopperTop™ alkaline batteries, and get out and enjoy!

Shovel Snow

Get an invigorating workout and cross a task off your to-do list by shoveling snow for exercise. Start off slow, because just like lifting weights, shoveling snow makes serious demands on your major muscle groups. If possible, use a shovel with a long handle so that you can slightly bend your knees and flex your back as you lift.
Go Sledding

Pick a snow-covered hill, strap on your boots, release your inner child and go sledding! Sled riding is so much fun that it might not even seem like exercise, but have no doubt: All that trekking up and down a hillside is bound to burn the calories. Just remember, as with hiking, sledding will wear you out; be sure to drink plenty of water — and wear your mittens!

Perfect Your Stretching Routine

If, like most people, you tend to spend more time indoors during this season, you might want to consider working on your stretching techniques. Stretching is an important part of any workout, so the better you stretch, the healthier you'll be. Consider investing in a yoga or Pilates DVD, or maybe even join a class for the winter months. As your hamstrings loosen and that mild backache fades, you'll be glad you did.

Hit the Gym

If the weather turns bitterly cold, you always can take your workout routine indoors by heading to a nearby health club. Is time an issue? If so, there's always a quick 30-minute run on the treadmill. On the other hand, if you feel more adventurous, you can hop on a circuit-training machine that you've never tried before. Also, keep in mind that many health clubs offer saunas and hot tubs — the perfect reward for the cold-weather athlete.
