Ease the Back-to-School Transition
For kids, going back to school can be a pretty stressful and uncertain time in their lives. But with your help, they can handle the transition with ease — and even look forward to it.
Going back to school can be exciting but stressful at the same time. Help your kids make the transition smooth by following these four simple steps.

Eliminate the Unknown

Demystify the school setting by visiting several times before school starts. Kids might groan about wasting their vacation, but they'll appreciate the trips later on. Younger children can play on the playground, see where their class will be and learn where the bathrooms are. Older kids and teens might be able to take summer workshops or participate in a sports camp at their school, and meet some of their peers.

Reinstitute a Routine

The most common hassle with starting the school year — for kids and parents — is the shock of a new routine. It might help to start getting kids accustomed to their "school night" bedtime (and wake-up call) a few weeks before school starts. You also can push much of that dizzying morning routine to the night before. Calmer mornings will leave young students more focused at school and you less stressed at work.
Celebrate With Shopping

Make the hunt for new school clothes an event. Help your kids (or let them) go through their old clothes, put away summer outfits and decide what they'll need for the new season. Let junior high and high school kids choose at least some of their clothes, within reason. If your children like their new outfits, they'll feel more confident when school starts.

Meet the Teacher

Get to know your child's teachers before or soon after the school year begins — and keep in touch. It will help you stay on top of any issues or problems that might arise. And when kids see their parents taking an interest in what they're doing, they tend to enjoy school more and feel less isolated.
